Grey Iron Casting
As a type of cast iron that has a graphitic microstructure, grey iron is a common engineering alloy because of its relatively low cost and good machinability. Grey iron is typically used in manufacturing internal combustion engine cylinder blocks, pump housings, valve bodies, electrical boxes and disc brake rotors.
Ductile Iron Casting
Ductile iron is known by several names, including ductile cast iron, nodular cast iron, spheroidal graphite iron, spherulitic graphite cast iron and SG iron. Ductile iron is specifically useful in many automotive components, where strength needs surpass that of aluminum, but do not necessarily require steel. Other major industrial applications include off-highway diesel trucks, Class 8 trucks, agricultural tractors, and oil well pumps.
High Silicon Molybdenum (HiSiMo)
HiSiMo is a variation SG Iron that offers superior heat resisting characteristics, offering good performance under thermal cycling conditions. This material has a much lower manufacturing cost than heat resisting steels and is easily machined. Common applications include exhaust manifolds or turbocharger parts and other products requiring resistance to corrosion, high temperatures and oxidation.
Steel castings are used when cast irons cannot deliver enough strength or shock resistance. Applications vary, including gears, valve bodies, pump casings, mining machinery, marine equipment, Turbocharger Turbines and engine cylinder blocks. With its high mechanical properties that function over a wide range of operating temperatures, steel castings are frequently used in railroad car parts, pumps and valves, heavy trucks, construction and mining equipment and power generation equipment.

Depending on the type of metal being cast, die casting processes may employ either a hot or cold-chamber machine. Best for high production volumes where accuracy, smooth surfaces and intricate parts are needed, typical die casting applications include engine front covers, high strength bearing surfaces, and appliances.
